Current state of affairs in the asphalt shingle sector.
Demand continues to be high with all shingle manufacturers due to a large order file from roofing suppliers and the retail segment. Supply, on the other hand, is at historically low levels during this time of the year. There are various reasons for this, which include (but not limited to):
During spring 2020, manufacturers slowed production due to the thought that the economy would slow because of Covid 19. This did not allow the normal supply build up in anticipation of spring & summer weather events.
At the same time, manufacturers took down their plants for maintenance and cleaning due to Covid 19 protocols.
Distributors and retailers flooded manufacturers with purchase orders due to anticipated needs of contractors.
Several manufacturers reduced their product offering (i.e. products and colors) in an attempt to fill their order file. Also, several went on allocation or planned availability with the intent of managing their production.
Construction soared and was strong during late Spring into Fall with a short 3-4 week slowdown during June/July.
The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season was the most active (12 that made landfall in the contiguous US), which created high demand for asphalt shingles.
Normally, the Winter gives distribution an opportunity to load up their yards to ease the pressure associated with Spring storms. For various reasons, we do not anticipate the supply to ease up potentially until 2nd half 2021. This thought does not account for Spring weather damage.
Note: based on model predictions and expert assessment, the likelihood for La Nina conditions is estimated @ 90%. This can contribute to an uptick of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes across the central US from March-May.
Supply and demand will tell you the next step is the cost of material will rise during 2021. We have already seen this with announced increases from all shingle manufacturers. There will be shortages of certain products and colors for the foreseeable future. Please let us know your needs, so we can order accordingly. Weatherwood and charcoal are # 1 and 2 colors. Outside of that, percentages are similar for the remaining colors. As always, we will continue to communicate what we are seeing at the manufacturing level. Thank you for your support!

A common issue in our industry is “how to properly measure a curb mounted skylight”. I have seen many mistakes due to there not being a common method. Here is a surefire way to measure a curb (most common in our area) mounted skylights for ordering purposes. This article address velux skylights but will work with other manufacturers also.
How to measure for a skylight replacement.
So, you’ve decided to replace the skylights on your reroofing jobs. Congratulations on earning extra money per job and leaving your customers with a product that will keep them smiling for years.
Now you need to measure for the replacement. How and what you measure will be determined by what kind of skylight is already on the roof. In this article, we explain how to measure for replacing old VELUX deck-mounted skylights, any kind of curb-mounted skylights and non-VELUX deck-mounted skylights.
Once you have your measurements, call VELUX customer service at (888) 242-7081 for assistance in selecting the optimal size skylight for your replacement job.
Identifying the skylight brand
First, look for the VELUX brand identification tag on the skylight. The ID tag includes the VELUX logo as well as the model, size, variant and product information. The ID tag can be found in the following locations:
Deck-Mounted VELUX Skylights — Look on the inside frame.
Curb-Mounted VELUX Skylights — Find it stamped on one of the four exterior sides.
VELUX Roof Windows — Look inside the ventilation flap.
Measuring to replace VELUX or non-VELUX curb-mounted skylights
For curb-mounted models that are VELUX or other brands, measure:
The length and width of the outside curb, including the curb and any roofing membrane material, and
The outside glass length and width from the inside edge of the skylight cladding.
Call Royce or Ryler at our office if you need more assistance or pricing on Velux or Birdview skylites.
